@dan_anwar It's unfortunately become a cliche about how this Arsenal squad feels like it's carrying dead woo, but that's what it feels like. Too many sub par players on high wages. I know it isn't the best example given the high signing on fees they pay, nor do I think Arsenal fans will appreciate the comparison, but if you look at some of the players Spurs have given their wage structure, it proves you can buy a very good standard of Premier League player for the wages that the likes of Denilson, Chamakh, Park, Bendtner etc... are on.I actually think Giroud, Podolski and Cazorla are the right kind of player that Arsenal need. At a realistic price point, just more of them are needed. As good as he may be, I really don't think Arsenal need another player like Wilfried Zaha - nor can they really afford to spend so much money on a player that is so young. The three I mentioned above are all at the right kind of ages, and if 3 or 4 more of them can be found in the right positions (a left back I think should be a big priority. I'm not sure about Gibbs anyway, but his injury record is such that it becomes a requirement). Beyond that, as you say, a holding midfielder.dan_anwar says:
I think we've been a level below Man Utd, City and Chelsea for a few years now and Wenger's actually overachieved by finishing in the top four and qualifying for the CL knockout rounds every season, but I still can't help feeling that his time may be coming to an end, which makes me incredibly sad. Even with different sets of players, Arsenal have still had the same flaws (complete inability to defend, crumble under any pressure, struggle to break down teams that sit deep and counter) for a long time that he either can't see or chooses to ignore. Now that we've lost our last world class player, we can't hide those flaws anywhere near as well. We don't even play good football as a consolation either nowadays. He's never been the best tactically, but his transfer dealings used to more than make up for that. We may not be able to splash out £30m+ on a player, but spending so much (in transfer fees and wages) on players like Chamakh, Park and Gervinho was a huge mistake, admittedly in hindsight. The squad badly needs a proper left-winger, a defensive midfielder, a top quality striker, another left-back and probably a keeper as well. To not spend the money available in the summer looked risky back then and it appears negligent now. I would like nothing more than for him to turn it round, but it looks less and less likely that he can.DavidHickey says:
you have to remember that chelsea winning the champions league has given them a massive cash injection so abramovich has not needed to put much of his own money in.. this time last season he had just spent 50 million on torres in january so they wanted to be a bit more careful, saying this they still spent over 60 million last summer with mata, meireles, lukaku all big money signings. it will be interesting to see if torres can step us this year... big pressure on him now after drogbas performance last season, most chelsea fans i talk to would rather have drogba still there than torres, especially after his comments after the champions league final.. i agree with you on city winning the title (also be ready for a frantic last few days in transfer window seen as they have only signed rodwell so far) and chelsea, united should fight it out for second although i think it will be closer than people think with arsenal, spurs and liverpool not too far awayiDesignSkin says:
Hi, I am italian and As Roma fan. Congrats, great, professional arcticle, full of details which sometimes are not mentioned by stupid italian journalists. One point, As Roma did not have space for extra UE players and could only go for Bradley because it has been an internal transfer in the italian market. No doubt about Bradley's skills, in Italy is underestimated, but noone puts an accent on his being the son of the coach! Finally, the idea that USA soccer and its players are at a lower level has almost disappeared. USA was the only team able o block Italy in 2006 World cup, many USA players play in Europe and if regulations allowed it we would have even more. One last point, Roma never offered Bojan to Newcastle, Bojan does not want to move and for the left back we will not go for Bosingwa but Piris and Jung are in a competition for the role. Ciao Ciao Antonio
